UK PREVIEW
UK PREVIEW: MNI's Data team writes ahead of tomorrow's UK retail sales release:
-Analysts tend to miss May's result with an upside bias. While the series is
notoriously volatile, the month of May has tended to see analysts overestimate
the total sales volumes growth figure.
-Weather, Royal Wedding and FA Cup should have boosted sales. It was the
joint-second hottest May since records began in 1910, coinciding with the Royal
Wedding, FA Cup and Champions League finals.
-Past evidence points to a strong boost but an immediate fall-back.
-Petrol Prices will have weighed on spending. The surge in crude oil prices
passed through to pump prices in May and households will have reluctantly
accepted the higher prices but possibly cut back spending in other areas.
-Surveys upbeat but against the backdrop of weak a 2018.
