Moderates To Lead 3-Party Gov't, Sweden Democrats Support From Outside

SWEDEN

Leader of the centre-right Moderates Ulf Kristersson has announced that he will lead a three-party minority gov't, propped up in a confidence and supply agreement by the right-wing populist Sweden Democrats. Parliament will vote on forming the gov't on Monday 17 Oct.

  • James Savage at The Local Europe: 'Agreement covers 7 areas of cooperation and a budget cooperation. Sweden Democrats will have officials in the government offices, but won't have ministers.
  • Sweden Democrats' leader Jimmie Akesson: "We would have liked to be in government. Now we're not in government it's important to have an agreement where we get influence over policy."
  • "Energy: new nuclear reactors will be built in Sweden. New government will work to get energy price cap in place ASAP."
  • Given the extremely narrow majority held by the gov't and Sweden Democrats, there will be notable focus on the longevity of the administration, particularly given that the Sweden Democrats have always sat in opposition. Centrist Liberals have proved somewhat uneasy about presence of Sweden Democrats, could splinter if they believe SD having too much sway over policy.
