Mountain Valley Pipeline Receives Regulator’s Approval

NATGAS

The Mountain Valley Pipeline in Virginia can begin operating after receiving approval from the US Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, cited by Reuters.

  • The Mountain Valley Pipeline is the only large gas pipeline under construction in the US Northeast and has encountered numerous regulatory issues since construction began in 2018.
  • The 303 mile (488 km) project will likely have a max capacity of 2 bcf/d.
  • It has not been confirmed when the pipeline will become operational.
  • Once operating, the pipeline is expected to cap upward price pressure during winter and summer demand spikes in the Transco Zone 5 market in the Northeast USA.
  • The pipeline could also open new markets for Marcellus and Utica shale producers within the Appalachia basin, although this may be limited due to ongoing downstream constraints.
