MPs Approved, New Government & PM By End July

THAILAND

The Bangkok Post is reporting that the Election Commission (EC) approved all 500 elected MPs on Monday and that parliament will reopen within 15 days in line with the law. A new House speaker will then be named and two deputies. The PM will be chosen after the king approves the speaker, which Pheu Thai believes will occur before end July.

  • The EC has a year to investigate complaints against elected MPs, including PM candidate Pita, and if it finds wrong doing can then request the Supreme Court to judge the case. MPs can be excluded retrospectively.
  • Pheu Thai leader Cholnan said that more talks are needed with election winners Move Forward to determine which party will take the speaker position. 8-party coalition talks will continue on Thursday.
  • Move Forward has said that it is confident that it will receive the support of enough senators for its PM candidate Pita to be approved. It wants to change the law that requires the support of appointed senators.
