N. Korea Fired Two SRBMs, Detained US Defector

NORTH KOREA

North Korea fired two short-range ballistic missiles (SRBMs) into the East Sea today, South Korea's military confirmed in a statement. The move appeared to be a show of force amid the arrival of a US nuclear submarine and the first meeting of a new South Korea-US security dialogue.

  • Separately, the North detained a US soldier who willfully crossed the border from South Korea. Sources told Bloomberg that the soldier was charged with assault and was being sent back to the US, facing formal separation from the military.
  • In addition, Yonhap News Agency reported that South Korea's National Intelligence Service warned that North Korea may step up cyberattacks ahead of the parliamentary election scheduled for April 2024.
