N. Korea Fires Multiple Cruise Missiles, May Have Launched Local Version Of "Tomahawk"

NORTH KOREA

Yonhap News Agency reports that North Korea fired several cruise missiles from the Hamhung area into the East Sea today, with South Korean military working to establish the details of the launch.

  • Chosun Ilbo newspaper had flagged earlier this morning that North Korea may have fired a long-range strategic cruise missile KN-27 known as a "North Korean Tomahawk."
  • The latest launch comes just three days after North Korea test-fired a short-range ballistic missile, simulating a nuclear counterattack.
  • Recent missile tests coincide with large-scale joint military exercises "Freedom Shield" held by South Korea and the U.S. which will wrap up tomorrow.
  • As a reminder, North Korea typically does not release official comments or footage of its missile launches until the day after a given test.
