N. Korea May Launch Satellite Within Week From Aug 24

NORTH KOREA

Japan's government announced that it has been notified about a North Korean plan to launch a "satellite" between August 24 - 31, Kyodo News reported today.

  • Pyongyang tried to launch a military reconnaissance satellite into orbit on May 31, but the attempt was unsuccessful.
  • Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said that he will coordinate with the US and South Korea to dissuade North Korea from the launch.
  • Kyodo highlights that "on five past occasions, N. Korea has launched a "satellite" within the first three days of its launch window after notifying others it would do so."
  • Japan and S. Korea treat N. Korean satellite launches as equivalent to ballistic missile tests violating UNSC resolutions.
  • Pyongyang continues to conduct missile tests despite the recent offer from the White House to enter top-level talks "without preconditions."
