N. Korea Test-Fires Ballistic Missile With Fake Nuclear Warhead

NORTH KOREA

North Korean state media said this morning that the country's military conducted exercises simulating a tactical nuclear counterattack against enemies over the weekend, Yonhap News Agency reports.

  • The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said that Kim Jong-un "guided" the drills, which included a launch of a ballistic missile launch with a "test warhead simulating a nuclear warhead."
  • The North's leader attended the exercises with his daughter and reportedly instructed soldiers to get better "prepared in their active posture of making an immediate and overwhelming nuclear counterattack anytime."
  • North Korea has stepped up its military activity amid large-scale "Freedom Shield" war games held by the U.S. and South Korea through Thursday, which the North has repeatedly condemned as alleged preparations for an invasion.
