Ukraine’s Prime Minister and Denys Shmyhal and Slovakia counterpart Robert Fico began talks on Monday on infrastructure cooperation and energy security. 

  • The topic is in focus with Ukrainian gas transit set to expire at the end of the year, something Slovakia is trying to avoid over gas supply fears.
  • Slovakian state-owned gas buyer SPP said earlier this month it was continuing negotiations to secure an extension of gas transit through Ukraine after Kyiv's contract with Russian supplier Gazprom.
  • Slovakia and Hungary were hit by a stop in flows from Russian group Lukoil back in July that have since been revolved. It has heighted Slovakia tensions with Ukraine, who were pushing the sanctions.
