NATGAS: Top Austrian Utility Removes Dependence on Russian Gas

The top utility in Vienna Wien Energy said it won’t need Russian fuel as of 2025, after sourcing 10TWh of alternatives, Bloomberg said.

  • This is about 12% of national consumption in Austria, Bloomberg said.
  • The alternatives will come from North Africa, the North Sea, and other LNG suppliers.
  • The announcement will help alleviate pressure on gas markets, with traders preparing for Russian gas flows via Ukraine to stop in January.
  • Over half of Austria’s gas supply came from Russia in H1 2024.
  • Wien Energy will continue to procure supplies via the Central European Gas Hub, bt will requirement certifications that the imports are not Russian.
