NATGAS: Up to EU to Decide Ukraine Gas Transit, No Azeri Gas Swap Talks: Novak

Russian Deputy PM Novak said that there are no swap deal discussions with Azerbaijan for gas transit via Ukraine.  TTF has pulled back after an initial rally in reaction to the comments.

  • Novak added that it is up to the EU and Ukraine to decide on future gas transit via Ukraine. There are proposals from EU partners to continue Russian gas purchases after Dec 31, Novak added.
  • The existing transit agreement between Russia and Ukraine is set to expire at year end but several central European countries are still reliant on the pipeline supplies and are trying to avoid the expected cut in flows.
  • Ukraine has no plans to extend a gas transit deal with Russia after it expires at the end of the year, Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal said on Monday after a meeting with his Slovak counterpart.
