Natural Gas Share of US Power Generation on the Rise: OilPrice

NATGAS

Natural gas-fired power generation in the US during 2024 so far is up year-on-year, according to OilPrice.com.

The increase has been driven by warmer temperatures and growing demand from data centres.

  • Natural gas has typically comprised 40% of all electricity-generating sources, the largest single provider.
  • This year, it is forecast to provide around 42% of the US electricity, while total consumption is up around 3% in 2024 and set for 2% annual growth in 2025, according to the EIA.
  • US power providers are raising generation from gas-fired capacity to meet higher peak loads.
  • Natural gas could be a major winner in the surge in AI-driven power demand. Although many AI companies would prefer to power their development centres on solar and wind, the need to have such facilities built and supplied quickly will give an advantage to natural gas.
