NBP To Announce Rate Decision, Zelensky Arrives In Poland

  • The NBP are expected to leave interest rates unchanged today and participants will focus on any hints on the timing of the future rate-cut cycle, amid uncertainty as to whether it will begin this year. We yesterday flagged comments from Governor Glapinski's senior aide, who wrote in an op-ed that tightening policy would be tantamount with "treating anaemia with blood-letting." There is no fixed time for the release of the rate decision or the statement, but the central bank typically gives a notice before publishing these.   • Polish officials are set to discuss a wide range of topics with their Ukrainian counterparts during today's visit of a delegation led by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to Warsaw. The key items on the agenda include defence cooperation, historical disputes that weighed on bilateral relations before Russia's full-scale invasion of its neighbour and the issue of shipping Ukrainian grain via Poland. President Andrzej Duda's chief foreign policy aide said that Zelensky has already crossed the border with Poland and the official welcome ceremony will take place at 10:00 BST/11:00 CEST.
  • The issue of Ukrainian grain imports has grown in importance ahead of the upcoming general election, as the influx of cheap Ukrainian produce pushed prices down, sparking protests among Polish farmers. PAP newswire yesterday reported that the issue might lead to the dismissal of Deputy Prime Minister and Agriculture Minister Henryk Kowalczyk, which could be announced this Thursday. The initial plan was for Poland and other neighbouring states to allow for the transit of Ukrainian grain through their territories, but logistical bottlenecks and insufficient monitoring resulted in a build-up of cheap grain in East Europe.
