NERSA To Decide On Electricity Tariff Hike As Eskom Runs Stage 6 Rolling Blackouts

  • Eskom's troubles are far from over after the beleaguered electricity utility announced indefinite Stage 6 load-shedding Wednesday. Tshwane municipality warned that their infrastructure was not designed for frequent outages and could suffer as a consequence of the rolling blackouts, deepening the problem. Meanwhile, Eskom's head of security said that the deployment of military troops to some power stations has done little to deter crime.
  • The National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA) will today decide on whether to approve a 32% tariff hike requested by Eskom. The decision has been delayed several times but is on the regulator's agenda for today.
  • Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana said that the government has lowered its 2022 economic growth forecast to +1.6% Y/Y from +1.9% and the outlook "isn't impressive either," as issues with electricity supply constrain economic activity.
