Netanyahu Expected Not To Nominate Yaron For Another Term As Central Bank Governor

ISRAEL

Ynet reports that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is not expected to ask Bank of Israel Amir Yaron to stay for another five-year term after the current one expires in November.

  • A source close to the Prime Minister told the news website that Netanyahu was disappointed with the Governor's comments on the adverse economic consequences of the government's controversial judicial reforms and is already looking for his successor.
  • Yaron has been vocal about the risks posed by the government's judicial overhaul, which sparked widespread street protests and underpinned a domestic political crisis.
  • Ynet suggests that if Netanyahu does not reach out to Yaron on his own initiative by August, offering him another term, the Governor will publicly announce that he would not seek re-appointment.
  • The outlets suggests that one of the possible candidates for Yaron's successor is Avi Simhon, who currently serves as Chair of the National Economic Council.
