Netanyahu Says Coalition Will Advance Moderate Version Of Judicial Overhaul

ISRAEL

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu gave a wide-ranging interview to the Jerusalem Post last night, the first one with an Israeli newspaper since his comeback last year.

  • Netanyahu said that the government will seek middle ground between "complete judicial activism and complete control by the Supreme Court of the other branches of government" and a situation "where you’d have the legislature and the executive of the government controlling the Supreme Court."
  • The Prime Minister praised the Israeli economy, noting that rating agencies "maintained Israel’s positive rating," while the country is still able to attract FDI (he cited Intel's planned $25bn investment). He planed down concerns over intraday volatility in FX and stock markets, pointing to the country's strong fundamentals.
  • Netanyahu said that Israel has "an unbreakable bond with the United States" and brushed away speculation that bilateral relations have become more tense. He said that he has "constant contact" with senior US officials and any disagreements don't affect diplomatic relations as a whole.
