Netherlands Groningen Field Only for "Emergency" Situation

The Netherlands has backed away from any suggestions it will boost production at its Groningen field to help with the current energy crisis. Instead, the countries state Secretary for the Extractive Industries said today it would only be restarted in an emergency.

  • She added that an “emergency” situation would still need to be defined.
  • Currently, the Dutch government indicates the definitive closure of Groningen by 2023, pushed back from mid-2022.
  • The field is not being considered because of earthquake fears.
