POWER
Belgium’s new coalition government is considering raising the country’s nuclear generation capacity by 4GW as part of the coalition agreement, Energy Minister Mathieu Bihet said, cited by DeTijd.
- The government is considering adding 4GW of new nuclear power capacity or extending the lifespan of existing reactors.
- “We want to keep that existing capacity open. We know that a discussion with Engie will be necessary for that”, Bihet said.
- “We still have to evaluate which technology we will use. But it is clear that it will not be just SMRs”, he added.
- Engie has reaffirmed its opposition to the Belgian government’s plan to extend the lifespan of the Doel 4 and Tihange 3 nuclear reactors by an additional ten years according to the Brussels Times.
- The reactors are currently scheduled to shut down in 2035.
