New Foreign Minister Pick Sparks Peru Libre Discontent

PERU

President Castillo announced Oscar Maurtua as the replacement on Friday

  • The appointment of an old-guard politician has spurred displeasure within the socialist Peru Libre party less than a month after the new government took power.
  • Maurtua, who held a foreign affairs minister post under President Alejandro Toledo in the 2000s, headed to the government palace on Friday to accept the role. As a reminder this comes following a media scandal over statements made by the previous appointee, Hector Bejar.
  • Members of the party regard the appointment of the career diplomat as a shift from the Castillo government's professed platform. Congressman Guillermo Bermejo wrote in a tweet on Friday that Maurtua, who favoured a policy of U.S. interference, "cannot represent a government of the left."

Separately, second quarter GDP is due today with no specific time scheduled on the calendar.
