New Fortress Energy to start construction of US$1bn LNG plant in Mexico: BNamericas

  • US natural gas firm New Fortress Energy will begin onshore construction of its second LNG plant at the Mexican port of Altamira by mid-year.
  • "We currently expect onshore construction to commence this summer and are working closely with CFE on that process and [will] provide additional updates as permits are received," CFO Chris Guinta told a recent Q4 earnings call.
  • “Construction of the modules is now over 50% complete,” Guinta said.
  • NFE began operations at its first plant at Altamira, a floating LNG facility named FLNG1, with capacity to produce 1.4Mt/y in July 2024. There have been 12 cargoes shipped from the plant.
  • For the second plant, FLNG2, NFE is converting an onshore import terminal built by Shell into an LNG export terminal. FLNG2 will have the same capacity as FLNG1.
