New Grain Deal Talks Begin; Putin Holds Security Council Meeting

  • Russia and the UN will today hold a new round of talks on the Black Sea grain deal in Moscow. The Kremlin said on Tuesday that the window to extend the Black Sea grain deal was shrinking and has repeatedly indicated it is prepared to walk away from the deal if its demands to ease restrictions on its own agricultural exports are not addressed.
  • Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang and Russia’s Sergei Lavrov discussed several issues, including the war in Ukraine, on May 4, according to a statement released yesterday by the Foreign Ministry in Beijing. Talks were held in Goa, India on the sidelines of a Shanghai Cooperation Organization conference.
  • Additionally, Foreign Minister Lavrov said that Russia has accumulated billions of rupees in Indian banks which need to be converted into other currencies.
  • President Vladimir Putin will hold a regular meeting of his Security Council where the alleged Ukranian drone attack on the Kremlin will likely be a topic of discussion. There are no major economic releases scheduled today.
