New PD, M5S Leadership Fails To Provide Boost To Party Support

ITALY

The new leaderships of both the centre-left Democratic Party (PD) and populist 5-Star Movement (M5S) have failed to provide a notable bump in support for either party according to latest opinion polling.

  • Tecne general election poll: League: 23.2% (-0.4), PD: 18.3% (+0.3), Brothers of Italy: 17.8% (+0.2), M5S: 16% (+0.2), Forza Italia: 10.3% (-0.2), Action: 3.1% (-0.1), Italia Viva: 2.2% (-0.1). Fieldwork: 26/03/21. 1,000 respondents. Chgs w/ 19/03/21.
  • The PD is now led by former Prime Minister Enrico Letta, while recently-deposed former PM Giuseppe Conte has taken over a 'reconstruction project' of the M5S, acting as a party leader in all-but-name. Neither of these appointments have resulted in a notable boost for either party, with the right-wing populist League still the most popular party.
  • The right-wing nationalist Brothers of Italy (FdI) continues to gain support, and now rests in a consistent third place in opinion polls. The party sits as the main opposition in parliament, being the largest party that does not support the technocratic gov't of PM Mario Draghi, and in doing so has been able to gain support from those opposed to the former ECB chief's administration.
