'No New Gov't Until Late November At Earliest'-Social Democrats

DENMARK

The largest party in the Danish Folketing (parliament), the centre-left Social Democrats of caretaker PM Mette Frederiksen, have confirmed that there will be no agreement on a new governing coalition until late November at the earliest.

  • In a statement the party stated that 'initial negotiations' with potential coalition partners will continue until 24 November, with 30 meetings having taken place between potential allies as of 11 November.
  • Main policy implications stem from which way the Social Democrats lean in their gov't formation. The main decision comes between working with the far-left Red-Green Alliance or the centrist Moderates of former PM Lars Lokke Rasmussen. Given the ideological disparity between these two, it is very unlikely that they would both be included in any coalition gov't.
  • There may also need to be work with a broad range of parties to secure an agreement on a temporary budget. Usually, budget negotiations take place in December, but protracted coalition talks could mean a short-notice plan is required. Agreements of this nature have been reached following previous elections in 2001, 2007, and 2011.
