Norway, Ukraine Enter Energy Agreement

POWER

The Norwegian and Ukrainian energy ministries have entered into an energy cooperation agreement after Russian attacks have severely crippled Ukraine's energy infrastructure, the Norwegian government said.

  • “As a result of the strikes of Russian missiles and drones, 9GW of capacity have already been destroyed. The peak of electricity consumption last winter was 18GW. So half now doesn't exist," Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Tuesday.
  • The letter of intent between Ukraine and Norway covers key parts of the energy sector, such as gas, renewable energy, networks and operation of power markets.
  • The agreement will also build on Norway’s efforts of donating technical equipment that has been previously supplied from the country’s power and network companies.
  • Ukraine is currently in talks about increasing its EU import capacity to around 2.2GWh from 1.7GWh currently.
