Norway & US to Remain Pillars of EU Gas Market: Platts

NATGAS

The US continues to dominate LNG supply into the European market despite weaker arbitrage economics, as healthy Norwegian pipeline supply aids restocking during injection season, Platts said.

  • The US has remained the top source for European LNG imports since 2021, overtaking Russia in 2020 and Qatar in 2021.
  • The US exported 4.4 bcm to the EU and UK in May, double the 2 bcm received from Russia.
  • However, Asia’s favourable arbitrage economics over NWE mean that US supplies to Europe eased in May, while cargoes from Yamal LNG have remained steady.
  • European prices have been tailing those of Asia, as buyers continue to be priced out of the global competition for seaborne cargoes.
  • Demand in Europe is relatively depressed while heatwaves in Asia have boosted cooling demand in the East.
