Norwegian Hydro Stock Narrow Surplus to 5-Year Average

Norwegian hydropower reserves rose by 0.5 percentage points last week to 79.2% of capacity as of 29 August, narrowing the surplus to the five-year average to 5 percentage points, NVE data showed.

  • In the week prior, stocks stood 5.06 percentage points above the five-year average.
  • Hydropower reserves in the NO1 region rose back above 100% to 101.5% last week, compared with a capacity of 99.8% the week prior.
  • Overall hydropower output increased on the week. Hydropower output from reservoirs rose by 1.106GW on the week to an average of 13.19GW.
  • Latest forecasts show little precipitation in Norway for the remainder of this week, limiting inflows into reserves.
  • Onshore wind power generation is forecast to remain below load factors of 20% during base-load hours for the remainder of this week, which could support some hydropower output.
