Norwegian Hydro Stocks Rose, Narrowed Surplus to 5-Year Average

Norwegian hydropower reserves rose by 0.7 percentage points last week to 85.3% of capacity as of 10 October, narrowing the surplus to the five-year average, NVE data showed.

  • Stocks slowed down the week-on-week increase from 1.8 percentage points the week prior.
  • The surplus to the five-year average narrowed to 6.7 points last week, down from 7.09 points the week before.
  • Norwegian hydropower output rose on the week. Output from pumped storage increased by 534MW on the week to 11.23GW. Wind output edged on the week to 1.5GW, down by 252MW on the week, Entso-E data show.
  • Forecasts suggest some precipitation in the hydro-intensive region of Vestland for this week. However, temperatures are expected to fall below 0°C, meaning some precipitation could fall as snow and limit inflows into reserves.
