FOREX: NZD snaps winning streak in quiet start to the week
-After last week's >2% gains in NZD/USD, kiwi dollar retreated somewhat Monday,
yet the Friday lows rarely looked troubled in a quiet, light volume session as
US markets remained closed for Presidents' Day. There were very few data
releases of note, with focus in the UK on the splintering of seven MPs from the
opposition Labour Party - however the near-term impact on Brexit's passage
through parliament is expected to be limited.
-AUD/USD retreated back below the 50-dma after bulls made an earnest attempt on
the 100-dma at $0.7160 and failed to make progress above, which may become the
focal point in Asia-Pacific trade with the RBA minutes due. Risk appetite also
remained somewhat subdued as Trump's team continues to weigh car tariffs against
the US.
-Risk events are weighted comfortably toward the tail-end of the week, with no
fewer than nine Fed speakers due Friday, with FOMC minutes on Wednesday. The
bulk of Eurozone and UK data is due tomorrow, with UK jobs data and German ZEW
survey on tap, followed by Eurozone and US PMIs following on Thursday.
