OIL: India Crude Imports Rise 5.7% y/y to High of 21.8m tons: PPAC

India’s crude oil imports in May increased by 5.7% year on year to a high of 21.8m tons, according to provisional data from the oil ministry’s Petroleum Planning & Analysis Cell.

  • Diesel exports fell by 9.9% year on year to 2.140m tons but rose from 2.00m tons in Dec.
  • Gasoline exports increased by 2.1% on the year to 1.277m tons and compared to 1.18m tons in Dec.
  • Fuel consumption in India, the world's third-biggest oil importer and consumer, edged higher by 3.2% m/m in May to 20.49m tons (4.84mbpd) but was down from 20.69m tons last year.
  • India is expecting at least 1mb/d of new refinery distillation capacity taking the total to 6.8mb/d or more according to IEA earlier this year. Product exports are set to reach 1.4mb/d by the middle of the decade, then fall to 1.2mb/d by 2030 due to a steady rise in domestic demand.
