Ongoing Protests Fail To Gain Traction, Boluarte Requests Dialogue

  • While anti-government protests in Peru are expected to continue for a third day, analysts have pointed out the small scale of the social unrest. Scotiabank noted that “roadblocks of any consequence were limited to Puno and Cusco. No airports were over-taken nor flights canceled. Mobility restrictions outside of Puno-Cusco were scarce and pretty much the rest of the country was quiet. No public buildings were burned, nor was any private property invaded.”
    • Furthermore, they described what has happened as “a far cry from the large-scale and violent protests of December which produced between 23 and 28 fatalities”.
  • In a press conference, President Dina Boluarte on Thursday reiterated that dialogue is the only path to put an end to protests, with the aim of decisively boosting true development and directly benefitting the population.
