Opposition Leaders Expected To Name Joint PM Candidate, Consultations With President Begin

POLAND
  • The leaders of Poland's pro-EU opposition parties will issue a joint statement at 09:00BST/10:00CEST ahead of the consultations on government formation, which are set to kick off in the Presidential Palace later today. The three parties (Civic Coalition, Third Way, Left) hinted that they would unveil some initial details about their future coalition government, including the name of their candidate for the Prime Minister position. It is widely believed that the pro-EU bloc will officially endorse Donald Tusk, the leader of the main opposition Civic Coalition, as its candidate for Prime Minister. The statement will represent a show of unity and reaffirm the readiness of the emerging coalition to assume power. It is intended to pressure President Andrzej Duda to hand pro-EU parties the mandate to form government, even as the head of state is expected to give the first chance to election front-runners Law and Justice, extending the whole process by several weeks.
  • DGP circulated a source report this morning, offering some insight into the upcoming talks at the Presidential Palace. One contact told the newspaper that the President has asked the ruling party to provide him with arguments that would justify allowing Law and Justice to make a futile attempt at government formation, as he still deliberates what would be the optimal solution. The President is reportedly planning to deliver an address once the consultations wrap up.
  • The meetings of party delegations with President Duda will kick off at 11:00BST/12:00CEST, with Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki due to represent Law and Justice alongside two senior party officials. The delegation of the Civic Coalition will head to the Presidential Palace at 13:00BST/14:00CEST. The Third Way, Left and Confederation will speak with the President tomorrow. Duda suggested that he will ask each party or bloc about its policy agenda as well as about its preferred candidate for Prime Minister and the ability to rally enough support behind them.
  • DGP reports that a day after his meeting with the President, Donald Tusk will depart for Brussels, where he will meet with European Commission members to discuss the potential for unfreezing Poland's share of EU recovery funds. The newspaper claims that he may speak with Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Economy Commissioner Paolo Gentiloni and Trade Commissioner Valdis Dombrovskis.
