Opposition "Moonshot Pact" Under Pressure Over Comments Re: Potential Cooperation W/ANC

SOUTH AFRICA
  • Tensions are simmering between members of the opposition "Moonshot Pact" aiming to oust the ruling African National Congress (ANC). ActionSA issued an ultimatum to the Democratic Alliance (DA) and the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) to publicly rule out teaming up with the ANC if the next election returns hung parliament or see it exit the pact. • The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) asked the Constitutional Court to review the Electoral Court's decision to allow ex-President Jacob Zuma to run in the upcoming parliamentary election. It is unclear if the apex court will be able to reach a verdict before the election.
  • South African Reserve Bank (SARB) Governor Lesetja Kganyago defended its stance on inflation, arguing that focusing on the +4.5% Y/Y mid-point of the target range is the right thing to do, even as it raises the risk of keeping rates higher for longer.
