Opposition Submits Motion To Dissolve Parliament Over Phala Phala Report

SOUTH AFRICA

South Africa's main opposition Democratic Alliance has tabled a motion to parliament seeking to dissolve the National Assembly over the Section 89 report on President Ramaphosa's involvement in the so called Phala Phala scandal.

  • DA leader John Steenhuisen said that Ramaphosa has lost his legitimacy and mandate to continue serving as South Africa's President, adding that the only way forward is by holding a fresh general election.
  • It is unlikely that the motion will be approved in the National Assembly, where the ruling ANC commands a comfortable 57.5% majority. Furthermore, press reports from over the weekend confirmed that Ramaphosa and his camp are planning to challenge the report.
