Opposition to Decide on Unified Candidate March 2

  • According to Milliyet, the opposition alliance will decide on their joint candidate for the upcoming elections at their meeting on March 2. The opposition will plan for a May 14 election date (Note: May 14 and June 18 dates have been discussed as potential election dates following the earthquakes).
  • The reconstruction cost of 130,000 buildings plus infrastructure will reach TRY843.5bln, or around $45bln at current exchange rates, according to calculations by Ekonomi newspaper.
  • Foreign Minister Cavusoglu held a press conference with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, where he urged the US to lift unilateral sanctions on Turkey’s defense industry and asked Congress to approve sale of F-16 fighter jets to Turkey, Bloomberg report. Blinken said the US and Turkey do not agree on every issue but can work out differences.
  • Turkey’s adjusted consumer confidence rose to 82.5 in February from 79.1 in January, according to data published by the statistics office this morning. However, it was noted that “a considerable portion” of the consumer tendency survey data was compiled before the Feb 6 earthquake. Looking ahead this week, the CBRT rate decision takes focus on Wednesday, where consensus is split between a hold and cut decision.
