Opposition Tries To Get Minister In Commons To Answer Qs On No.10 Leaks

UK

The main opposition Labour Party has requested an Urgent Question for Cabinet Office Secretary Michael Gove relating to the Ministerial Code, which is likely set to be used as an opportunity to seek answers regarding the ongoing leaking scandal that has hit No.10 Downing Street. UQ due at 1535BST.

  • PM Boris Johnson is under pressure on a number of fronts due to the leaks, most pressingly when he allegedly told Cabinet colleagues to "let the bodies pile high in their thousands", rather than go into another COVID-19 lockdown.
  • The Daily Mail story attributes the claims to a 'source close to Michael Gove', not confirmed but viewed widely to be former senior adviser to the PM Dominic Cummings, who has engaged in a briefing war with No.10 in recent days via leaks and his own blogposts.
  • Labour will be hoping to pin down Gove on whether the comments were made, which if proved could deal notable reputational damage to PM Johnson.
