Orban to Hold State of Nation Speech Tomorrow (1400 GMT/1500 CET)

HUNGARY
  • Prime Minister Orban will hold his annual state of the nation speech tomorrow at 1400 GMT/1500 local time. According to local news site Origo, Orban will use his speech primarily to present his thoughts and plans on how the government can protect Hungary in “the era of dangers” – a term his government has frequently used to describe the geopolitics regarding Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
  • Last year, the speech was held two weeks before Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and focussed on the then upcoming elections as well as risks to instability in the region.
  • Orban’s speech tomorrow is likely to focus on Hungary’s strategic direction in the coming years after his political director last month published an article where he said that the biggest challenge facing the nation in the next decade is to move out of the middle-income group and catch up with developed countries, achieving the status of a regional middle power in Central Europe.
  • The speech will be also watched for any potential shift on Orban’s stance on Hungary-EU relations. The finance minister has called recent sanctions “ill-advised”, while Orban himself has said that they have inflicted "enormous damage" on the EU and Hungary.
