Pakistan in Talks for Further LNG Cargoes

Pakistan’s government has begun talks to secure at least one LNG cargo per month from December to meet fuel demand, Pakistan’s Junior Petroleum minister Musadik Malik said.

  • The planned cargoes will be in addition of Pakistan’s existing LNG contracts.
  • Pakistan has been facing significant problems to secure sufficient gas supplies for this winter, amid high prices for LNG and a strong US dollar.
  • In October, Pakistan held talks with Russia for potential LNG supplies.
  • Last week an official from the petroleum ministry told parliament that Pakistan has no other option but to ration natural gas supply this winter, with gas provided three times a day for cooking to households,
  • Surging coal and LNG prices in April left the country with having to cut power to households and industries.
