Panetta: ECB Not Far Off Final Destination

ECB Board member Fabio Panetta gave an interview in Le Monde.

  • The Executive Board member stated that the ECB is not far off the final destination in terms of rates and that now is it not the time to accelerate tightening given the degree to which rates had been raised already.
  • He went on to note that inflation remains high, but tighter policy will bite more in the coming months.
  • Finally, he said that a technical recession can't be ruled out for the Eurozone.
  • Panetta has always been at the dovish end of the ECB spectrum, and these comments shouldn't provide much impact for markets.
