Parliament Debates Key Bills, Opposition Unlikely To Contest Election As Single Bloc

  • Lower house committee recommended rejecting the Senate's amendments to the court bill drafted by the government to unlock access to EU recovery funds. The Sejm will convene for plenary sitting today, with the debate on Senate amendments to the court bill scheduled for Wednesday evening. During its three-day sitting, the lower house will also discuss legislation liberalising the rules on establishing wind farms, which is another condition for securing access to EU funds.
  • Poland's EU Minister Szymon Szynkowski vel Sek expressed hope that lawmakers will approve judicial reforms needed to obtain EU financing. He noted that under an optimistic scenario, Poland could get the funds this summer. The government is under time pressure to secure access to the EU funds, which would help finance spending ahead of the autumn parliamentary election.
  • The odds of the opposition contesting the upcoming election as a single bloc have decreased amid lingering tensions between parties. Senior lawmakers from the main opposition Civic Platform announced that the party is starting preparations to run alone. Onet reported that Civic Platform leader Donald Tusk suggested at a closed-door meeting that the idea is unlikely to be realised.
