Parliamentary Committee Calls for Petrol Policy Review

SOUTH AFRICA
  • After extending fuel subsidies earlier in the week, Parliament’s portfolio committee has called for a formal review of the country’s petrol pricing policies. The head of the committee proposed placing domestic taxes elsewhere, flagging that previous proposals to allow forecourts to set their own prices could negatively impact small businesses.
  • News24 reports that former State Security Agency director Arthur Fraser has opened a criminal case against President Ramaphosa, claiming that Ramaphosa had concealed a crime relating to the theft of "in excess of four million US dollars". Fraser had been responsible for the original release of former President Zuma last year – a decision that was reversed by the Gauteng high court.
  • BusinessLive quotes the CEO of the Minerals Council as saying that as a result of insufficient spending on exploration, South Africa is not adding new sources to secure future minerals production, which poses a threat to the economy. He said that the lack of spending, partly due to the lack of mining policy certainty and long delays in providing licences, threatens the industry’s contributions to the broader economy.
