POLAND: Parliamentary Panel Asks For Prosecutors' Help In Glapinski Probe

POLAND
  • Money.pl reported that efforts towards holding NBP Governor Adam Glapinski to account for his alleged transgressions may only accelerate after the presidential election. Meanwhile, the parliamentary committee overseeing a probe into Glapinski's conduct has asked the Public Prosecutor General for help as the central bank refused to hand over requested documents. A source from the NBP told Money.pl that the NBP is being asked by major investors about the possible outcomes of the process, but is currently telling them that the Governor will not be ousted or suspended.
  • Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will hold bilateral talks with Prime Minister Donald Tusk and President Andrzej Duda in Warsaw today. His joint press conference with Tusk has been scheduled for 11:40GMT/12:40CET, with the leaders expected to announce progress in addressing divisive historical issues. Zelensky's visit is intended to be an impulse for repairing Polish-Ukrainian relations, which gradually soured after an initial rapprochement at the beginning of the war.
  • The presidential campaign formally begins today with the official publication of the Sejm Speaker's announcement on the date of the election. Prime Minister Tusk said that he expects a bitterly fought contest and a close result ("it will be 50/50") after several recent polls showed that his ally Rafal Trzaskowski's lead over his main rival Karol Nawrocki has narrowed.
  • The NBP starts its two-day monetary policy meeting, with the rate decision set to be announced tomorrow. It will be followed by a press conference with Governor Glapinski on Friday. The NBP is expected to stand pat on rates.
  • Statistics Poland will release final December CPI data at 09:00GMT/10:00CET. The preliminary report showed that inflation accelerated slightly less than expected to +4.8% Y/Y.
