ARGENTINA: PASO Suspension Proposal Advances To Lower House

  • In a congressional committee meeting yesterday, the government secured enough votes to advance a proposal to suspend the primary elections (PASOs) for this year’s midterms. The proposal now moves to the Lower House, where it is expected to be voted on tomorrow, according to Bloomberg.
  • Argentina holds mandatory primary elections for all directly elected national positions, with this year’s primaries scheduled for August 3. The midterm elections are scheduled for October 26, when half of the seats in the Chamber of Deputies and a third of the seats in the Senate will be elected.
  • Separately, the Association of Automobile Manufacturers will publish data on sales, exports and production of vehicles in January later today. Further ahead, the central bank publishes its latest analysts survey tomorrow, including GDP and CPI forecasts, while December IP and construction activity figures cross on Friday. January CPI inflation data are due next week.
