Pavel Meets ANO Lawmakers To Discuss Pension Bill, Industrial PPI Slows More Than Forecast

CZECHIA
  • President Petr Pavel told Hospodarske Noviny that he is close to making a decision on whether he will support the government's plan to slow pension growth. He noted that he does not expect his decision to increase his popularity as he will come under criticism whatever his stance will be. The leader will meet representatives of the main opposition ANO party to discuss the bill before he announces his own position. If he refuses to sign off on the bill, the lower house can override his veto with an absolute majority of votes, but the repeated parliamentary debate would most likely be filibustered by the opposition raising the risk of a failure to pass the legislation by the government's March 22 deadline.
  • The local political calendar is quite busy today. The Cabinet holds its regular meeting this morning, while the Chamber of Deputies' budget committee will debate the CNB's monetary policy report.
  • Czechia's industrial PPI for February came in at +16.0% Y/Y (median est. +16.8%) after +19.0% recorded in the previous month.
