Pelosi & Tsai To Hold Joint Presser At 10:53am Local Time

TAIWAN

U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen will hold a joint press conference in the Presidential Palace today at 10:53 CST/03:53 BST. The presser will follow their meeting, which will also be attended by Taiwan's Vice President, Secretary-General of the National Security Council and Foreign Minister.

  • In response to U.S. House Speaker's visit to Taiwan, China has stepped up military activity around the self-governed island. Beijing announced large-scale live-fire military drills in several locations around Taiwan, while the island's Defence Ministry said PLA aircraft made 21 sorties into its Air Defence Identification Zone (ADIZ) on Tuesday.
  • On top of deploying its military assets, China continued to broadcast threats of unspecified retaliation via different diplomatic and media channels and reiterated its condemnation of "a serious violation of the one-China principle and the provisions of the three China-U.S. joint communiques."
  • We have also learnt more details about China's latest trade measures. Beijing has slapped a ban on more than 2,000 of 3,228 registered Taiwanese food imports, while BBG sources noted that a giant Chinese EV battery producer CATL postponed the announcement of a multibillion-dollar North American plant to supply Tesla and Ford.
  • The market will continue to monitor how tensions over Taiwan evolve during and beyond Pelosi's stay, which she is expected to wrap up this afternoon. It is unclear if/what further retaliatory measures from Beijing are in store.
