Pemex Akal-B Platform, Mexico, Suffers Fire on Saturday

Mexico’s Pemex had a fire on its Akal-B oil platform in the Campeche Bank Saturday.

  • Pemex said the fire was controlled in under 20 minutes via an official statement. They did not say whether production had been impacted.
  • Akal-B, which is part of the Cantarell production complex, produces 200,000 barrels per day of oil and 900,000 cubic feet of gas.
  • Videos and photographs apparently taken from a boat near the platform and shared on social media showed huge plumes of black smoke rising from oil and gas infrastructure according to Reuters.
  • In its latest statement on Sunday, Pemex said they were taking actions for “the reestablishment” of operations at the Process Center suggesting production may be impacted.
