Persistent Pressure On President Castillo

  • President Pedro Castillo asked a Supreme Court judge to annul a prosecutor complaint against him, his lawyer Benji Espinoza said via Twitter overnight.
    • The judge previously ruled that a sitting president can only be subject to preliminary investigations, with no further measures applicable, Espinoza said on TV Peru
    • Espinoza said that Castillo is ready to take his case to the nation’s Constitutional Court and even to the Inter-American Court of Human Rights.
  • Separately, the opposition in congress have agreed to file a vacancy motion against Castillo only if 87 lawmakers sign the document, Alejandro Soto, Alianza Para el Progreso party’s spokesperson told RPP.
    • For reference, the motion requires 22 signatures to be filed in congress and 87 votes during the plenary debate to oust the president and Soto said the motion had 25 signatures through last night.
