PERU: BCRP Interest Rate Decision Expected, Ex President Alberto Fujimori Dies

  • The fall of core inflation to within the BCRP’s target band for the first time since January, along with the weak June economic activity print and expectation that the Fed will start an easing cycle this month, keeps the door open for the BCRP to deliver another 25bp rate cut to 5.25% today (0000BST/1900ET). The majority of analysts are forecasting a 25bp cut, although some see risks of a renewed pause amidst signs of pressure on the currency.

  • In other news, former president Alberto Fujimori has died at the age of 86, his family announced. Fujimori was president from 1990 to 2000, before serving time in prison for various charges including human rights violations. He was released last December when a court ruling upheld a presidential pardon, and recently toyed with the idea of running again in the upcoming 2026 elections.
