PERU: BCRP’s Velarde, Finance Minister Arista To Speak

PERU
  • BCRP President Julio Velarde and Finance Minister Jose Arista will speak at the annual CADE business conference in the city of Arequipa today. No macro data are due, with November CPI inflation the next scheduled release on Dec 1. Early analyst estimates suggest that prices are on course to rise 0.1% m/m, which if correct would lift the annual CPI inflation rate to around 2.3% y/y, from 2.0%.
  • Meanwhile, BNamericas reports that this week’s firing of energy and mines minister Romulo Mucho is a blow to efforts to tackle illegal mining in the country. Congress voted to fire Mucho on Tuesday over a bill the government introduced last week to increase oversight on informal miners that has prompted nationwide protests.
  • With his departure, the chances of the bill’s approval are low, which the report suggests will allow illegal mining operations to continue outside the formalisation process. Illegal mining is expected to generate $6bn in revenues this year.
