Petro Falls In Polls Amid Warnings Of 'Another Maduro'

COLOMBIA

Two out of three Colombian presidential election second round polls released today show Rodolfo Hernandez will the marginal lead over previous favouite Gustavo Petro.

    • Invamer poll: Hernandez: 48% Petro: 47%
    • Mosqueteros poll: Hernandez: 49% Petro: 48%
    • GAD3 poll: Petro: 48% Hernandez : 47%
  • Hernández today issued a warning on the extreme nature of Petro's policies as he seeks to present himself as the more moderate candidate: "If he wins, I don't know how long he will last in power, because he is another Maduro."
  • First round presidential candidate Sergio Fajardo offered this analysis explaining the conundrum facing moderate voters: "Petro is a messianic and authoritarian leader who offers impossible programs. Hernández "knows little about the country and his experience governing and in politics is limited. I don't have to go out and say which one is less bad."
  • The second round runoff will take place on June 19.
