Petrol Prices Point To Easing In December Inflation Expectations

AUSTRALIA DATA

The Melbourne Institute’s measure of consumer inflation expectations for December prints today. The series has a high correlation with national petrol prices and last month it rose to 6% from 5.4% as petrol prices rose 6.6% m/m. But last week petrol fell to its lowest level since the full fuel duty was reinstated, after decreasing for four consecutive weeks. This brought the December average to date down 8% m/m. Thus, there is a high probability that there will be some moderation in December inflation expectations today.
